After a tremendous kick off at the SIHH 2018, Ulysse Nardin continues to impress
with an unusual creation : The « Free Wheel »

This timepiece is a ballet of gear trains! and to make it even more interesting a Flying Tourbillon and Power reserve indication are present over the black slab of slate dial or base.

The big black round component at 12 o’clock (with the UN logo in the center) is the barrel. That’s basically where the energy is coming from. Inside of it, there are two mainsprings and when you are going to wind the calibre UN-176 (using the crown) that’s where the energy is stored. Here you have a manual winding mechanism so after 7 days (if fully winded), the watch needs some « fuel ». It’s time to turn the crown and enjoy the tradition of Mechanical Watchmaking. For your information, no risk to break anything during the operation. Don’t worry! you can play as much as you want with the crown.

The Flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock is Superb! I love how you can explore the silicium components and its aesthetics. Next to it (between 4 and 5 o’clock) is the Power reserve indicator. Only the grey component moves and it’s quite interesting because it makes me think about one logo app of the apple watch. I guess, it’s the fitness tracking rings but i’m not sure… I don’t own and either like the apple watch.

The rest of the gears trains visible is basically linked to the Hour/minutes hands or the Energy (meaning the barrel and power reserve) mechanisms. Once again, Black & Rose Gold colours match perfectly and i have to say that the case is quite a wonderful achievement.

Very well done! Ulysse Nardin.
