DEFY EL PRIMERO 21
A NEW PATENTED MATERIAL & 100TH OF A SECOND CHRONOGRAPH !
ZENITH launched a wonderful novelty at Baselworld 2017 : The DEFY EL PRIMERO 21, a new in-house calibre measuring the 100th of a second (chronograph). The timepiece has also a new patented recipe « Carbon-Matrix Carbon Nanotube composite » insensitive to the temperature and magnetic fields. The brand uses it in the balance-spring as this particular component needs to stay stable as much as possible.
The calibre El Primero 9004 is pure pleasure! Inside, two distinctive « roads » were created. One for the time and a second for the chronograph (each has its own transmission
and escapement system).
The most spectacular fonction is obviously the 100th of a second chronograph. The central hand does a full turn per second! meaning a frequency of 50 Hz (10 times more than the a standard El Primero timepiece.) The blue (at 3 o’clock) & black (at 6 o’clock) counters + the 50 minutes chronograph power reserve (at 12 o’clock) are linked to this very entertaining mechanism.
The hour & minute hands are at the center with a discrete seconds indication at 9 o’clock.
It’s important for us to mention that the oscillating weight (back side) is unidirectional and exclusively related to the time fonction (not the chronograph).
The crown can be used (or must be used for the chronograph) to wind the fonctions. Clockwise you’ll wind the chronograph (mandatory) and counterclockwise the watch.
We love the fact that such calibre is designed to be « industrialised » with only 203 components!
We couldn’t be happier to witness the new « beginning » of ZENITH under Mr. Biver as he mentioned that this could be his last challenge before retirement.
